Moving Containerised Cargo Across the Tasman: What Shippers Need to Know
Trans-Tasman container freight looks straightforward — until it is not. A practical look at FCL vs LCL, packing rules, biosecurity and transit times.
FCL or LCL — pick the right one
- FCL (Full Container Load) — you pay for the whole box. Best when you have enough volume to fill a 20' or 40' container, or when your goods are sensitive and you want sole use.
- LCL (Less than Container Load) — your cargo shares a container with other shippers. Cost-effective for smaller consignments but slower, because the container has to be consolidated and deconsolidated at each end.
As a rough rule: under 8 cubic metres, LCL usually wins on cost. Above that, FCL becomes more economical and noticeably faster.
Packing matters more than you think
A container will be lifted, stacked, rolled at sea, and lifted again. Cargo that arrived in perfect condition at the port can arrive damaged at the destination if it was not packed for movement.
Key rules:
- Distribute weight evenly — heavy at the bottom, light on top, balanced front to back
- Use dunnage, airbags or strapping to fill voids
- Never exceed the container's plated weight limit (it will be weighed at the port)
- Label fragile or orientation-sensitive items clearly
- Photograph the load before sealing — your insurance claim depends on it
Biosecurity — MPI takes this seriously
New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) inspects a high percentage of inbound containers. Common causes of delays and fees:
- Soil or organic matter on the container exterior or contents
- Untreated wood packaging (must be ISPM-15 stamped)
- Live insects, spiders or seeds
- Undeclared food, plant or animal material
A failed inspection means fumigation, cleaning fees, and storage charges — easily $1,000–$3,000 in unplanned costs. Prevention is much cheaper.
Transit times
Typical trans-Tasman container transits:
- Sydney/Melbourne to Auckland: 5–8 days port to port
- Brisbane to Auckland: 4–7 days
- Add 2–4 days each end for consolidation, customs clearance and inland delivery
LCL adds another 3–5 days at each end for consolidation work.
What drives your final cost
- Ocean freight rate — quoted per container (FCL) or per cubic metre (LCL)
- BAF / fuel surcharge — varies monthly
- Port and terminal handling at both ends
- Customs clearance and biosecurity fees
- Inland transport to the final destination
A good freight quote shows all of these as line items. If yours does not, ask — surprises on the final invoice are almost always hiding in the items that were not quoted up front.
